Disappointed
I was, understandably, disappointed not to even make a shortlist in a competition for Creeksong. The 2023 competition for eBooks had heaps of entries. And I am so new at this. And then came the feedback from one of the Writers Digest judges. And my heart soared. Whoever this person is, they “got” it.
Got me.
Got Creeksong! A summary of what the judge said in the review
Here’s my summary of the feedback I received from one competition judge:
The memoir’s storytelling prowess shines through its compelling plot and topic appeal. The author navigates the path from a broken relationship with a nuanced perspective, avoiding blame and conveying quiet resignation and humility. This approach allows readers to empathize and connect with the author’s growth. The story’s setting, marked by seasonal transitions and vivid observations of Nature, adds a layer of richness, enhancing the narrative. The use of brilliant lists to share sensory details, coupled with the author’s instinct for description, immerses readers deeply. The reader will find beauty in the description of emptiness early in the story, likening it to a tree’s perception. The author’s ability to capture realism in Nature and the diverse characters who populate the narrative adds to the book’s appeal.
Further, incorporating songs (“singing the blues”) enhances the emotional dimension of the story. Memorable phrases and moments, such as “I burned my boats” and the exploration of sensuality and sexuality’s rebirth, leave a lasting impact. The author’s tender portrayal of sexual experiences resonates, and the sentence “No child of this blessed Earth can ever be motherless” deeply grips the reviewer.
The memoir excels in several aspects, notably in carefully developing the author’s persona and narrative structure. We experience the gradual evolution of the author’s character, akin to the enchanting storytelling of Jane Goodall and the narrative finesse of Cheryl Strayed. We can admire the story’s emotional depth, highlighting how the book impeccably times its emotional peaks, avoiding any sense of rush or lack. Transitions between chapters show seamless execution, showcasing the author’s meticulous structuring. A steady pace ensures readers can fully absorb the sensory details, fostering an intimate connection with the story’s honesty. Additionally, we appreciate the author’s sensitivity, especially in portraying childhood and multifaceted characters, instilling empathy and depth. The writing style is friendly, emotionally rich, and kind, inviting readers to become part of the author’s journey.
Happy Now!
Young Wadi, who rarely thought things were going well, is happy now. No longer the exasperated eight-year-old!
